Presentation :

Consider treatment with prednisolone if Maddrey Discriminant Function (MDF) score >=32 OR if hepatic encephalopathy present.
- MDF = 4.6 x (prothrombin time – control prothrombin time) + serum total bilirubin
- A meta-analysis of randomized studies showed that glucocorticoids were effective in reducing short-term mortality by 46%.
- Must weigh risks of infection or gastrointestinal bleeding
Prednisolone should be discontinued if there is no or only minimal response to therapy by day 7, as determined by the Lille model score
