Milk-Alkali Syndrome
Presentation :
- Ingestion of large amounts of calcium, typically from antacid use (e.g., calcium carbonate), especially with coexistent chronic kidney disease
Pathophysiology :
Diagnostic Testing:
- Hypercalcemia w/ suppressed PTH
- Alkalosis
- Monitor renal function
Treatment :
- Withdrawal of the offending agent
- IV hydration
- Hold medications which can worsen hypercalcemia (eg thiazides)
