Spinal Cord Compression
Presentation :
- Cancers which are predisposed to cord compression include prostate, lung, breast, and multiple myeloma
- Most common presenting symptom is back pain. On initial evaluation, pain is present 83-95% of the time, followed by weakness (35-75%) and less commonly sensory changes.
Pathophysiology :
Diagnostic Testing:
- MRI total spine is recommended (partial imaging may miss intervenable lesions)
Treatment :
- Prompt administration of Dexamethasone 10mg followed by 4mg q6h
- Consultation from neurosurgery and/or RadOnc
